NEW YORK — Police say a teenager on the streets of Manhattan was fatally struck by a truck Friday followingnoon, and what happened next left witnesses shocked.
The truck driver remained on the scene following hitting the 18-year-old bicyclist around 12:40 p.m. in Gramercy, the man visibly distraught on the bench of a bus as police questioned the driver.
Life-saving measures were attempted, but authorities say the young cyclist’s injuries proved fatal.
“The doctors came over and tried to resuscitate him, they were pressing on his chest,” a witness, Ash Alavi, told our sister network, NBC New York.
As first responders tried to revive the injured teen, police say someone took the victim’s Citi Bike electric bike and drove off.
“The doctors put [la bicicleta] on the side of the road and we were all watching what was going on with the medics and following a couple of minutes I noticed the bike wasn’t there but I assumed some of the emergency service took that away,” Alavi said.
Police believe the bicyclist was heading north on 1st Avenue when he attempted to turn left onto East 17th Street. That’s when he was hit by the truck.
Brian Ferrari meets the teenager who was murdered. He received a phone call but refused to believe the horrible news, he had to see the scene for himself.
“I might not believe it. Especially here, that’s how we grew up. Played since he was a baby. An incredible person,” Ferrari said.
There does not appear to be any wrongdoing at this point in the investigation, police say.
