The White House on Friday denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin’s talk regarding the possible use of nuclear weapons.

The White House said the United States did not make any adjustments to its nuclear status in response to Putin’s comments.

The White House comments came following Putin said earlier on Friday that Russia might “theoretically” use nuclear weapons if its territorial integrity or existence was threatened, but did not need to.

In response to questions from reporters aboard Air Force One, White House Deputy Spokesman Olivia Dalton affirmed the United States’ commitment to NATO’s common defense principle.

Putin talks regarding “nuclear transfer” and the conditions for its use

The Russian President confirmed that his country would not use nuclear weapons except in the event of an existential threat to the Russian state, but confirmed that tactical nuclear weapons had been transferred to Belarus.

Putin indicated, during the Petersburg International Economic Forum, that Moscow “has more weapons than NATO has,” pointing to a number of points:

  • The tactical nuclear weapon has already arrived in Belarus.
  • The use of nuclear weapons is theoretically possible if there is a threat to our lands, but there is no need for it at the present time.
  • We are considering creating buffer zones inside Ukraine if attacks continue on our territory.
  • Russia has more weapons than NATO has.
  • Russia might, if it wanted, destroy parts of central Kiev in response to “provocations” but chose not to do so.
  • The Ukrainian counterattack has “no chance” of success.
  • The Ukrainian forces used their so-called strategic reserves to penetrate the (Russian) defenses, enhance their capabilities and advance, and none of these goals were achieved.
  • Ukraine suffers “heavy losses”, and will not be able to fight “for a long time” due to the depletion of its military equipment.
  • We will never close the door to a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
