Rising Concerns: Contamination Outbreaks and Flu Resurgence in Japanese Nurseries and Schools

From our correspondent in Tokyo, Bruno Duval

In Japan, there are countless nurseries that remain closed due to outbreaks of contamination. And in several hundred schools, entire classes have had to return to distance education as during the state of emergency.

What the director of an establishment in the city center testifies to: So many sick school children, I had never seen this – even at the worst times of the Covid-19 epidemic. And many children are in such bad shape that they are bedridden, therefore unable to follow distance learning lessons. »

Doctors no longer know where to turn. Like this pediatrician: It is the great return of the flu, but also of two other highly contagious viruses that we had not seen for three years. They can cause breathing difficulties or high fevers in young children. Some even come to convulse. At the moment, I see regarding fifty little patients a day... »

These parents are worried regarding their children, aged 15 and 18 months respectively. ” For a week, my little boy has been coughing a lot and last night he was burning with fever “explains one of them. ” My daughter is terribly thin. She doesn’t eat much anymore because it seems like she has a very sore throat when she swallows “says another.

To make matters worse, in pharmacies, flu screening tests are running out. Just like cough syrups or painkillers.
