The 20 to 30-meter-long ship carrying hundreds of people was originally scheduled to set off from the North African country of Libya (Libya) to Italy, but the voyage passed a distance from Greece.peloponnese peninsula(Peloponnese) regarding 75 kilometers south, it may unfortunately capsize due to overload. In the early morning of June 14, the Greek government dispatched coast guards, planes and ships to carry out a large-scale rescue operation and rescued 104 people in the sea.

Kalamata deputy mayor Ioannis Zafiropoulos said the survivors were males aged between 16 and 40, mostly from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Egypt. They were not wearing lifejackets when they were rescued, and they suffered severe physical and mental injuries. Many of them fainted due to exhaustion on the boat before arriving on land, and some suffered from severe pneumonia. They were sent to Kalamata City (Kalamata) for rescue.

A doctor who treated the passengers said he learned from the survivors that there were close to 100 children on board, and they were locked in the cabin at the bottom of the ship with the women. However, it is impossible to verify how many children actually died. Family members of missing Egyptian children have also sent photos to medical institutions one following another, hoping to help identify them if any children are rescued.

The cause of the capsizing of the ship is unknown, but Greek officials judged that it was likely that the ship’s hull and engines might not be loaded due to severe overloading. The Greek authorities announced on the evening of June 15 that they had arrested nine persons suspected of human trafficking, all of whom were males of Egyptian descent, presumed to be the masterminds.

The European International Border Agency (Frontex) reconnaissance plane spotted the ship on June 13 and offered assistance several times, but they “refused to accept any help” and insisted on continuing to sail north at high speed. However, the “Emergency Hotline Organization” (Alarm Phone) stated that it had received a distress message from the passengers on board, but it did not expect that the sad news of the capsized and sunken ship came out later.

The Coast Guard also stated that it was a very dangerous act to forcibly divert a ship carrying hundreds of people without the cooperation of each other.
