His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, made an official working visit to the Republic of Turkey, where he met President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. During the visit, His Highness the President of the State discussed the friendly relations and bonds of friendship between the two countries, strengthening strategic relations, and advancing the comprehensive economic partnership that brings together the two countries and the Emirati and Turkish peoples.
This visit comes as part of the UAE’s relentless endeavor to strengthen its relations with the countries of the region and the world as a whole to achieve the common interests of countries and peoples within the framework of achieving global peace and security, which is a major goal in the UAE’s declared foreign policy.
In this context, the UAE’s relations with Turkey appear promising, as each of them has many interests that can be achieved by the other and vice versa.
The UAE’s relations with Turkey are not limited to the diplomatic and political levels, but they include broad areas on the economic, commercial, financial, investment, strategic, security, military and industrial levels, affecting the public and private sectors.
Turkey has regained its great importance among the countries of the region following it was able to rise from its political and economic problems over the past two decades, and it is now achieving remarkable successes.
Turkey’s proximity to Russia and Central Asia, its control of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits, its geographical proximity to the Arab world and Iran, and its overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, give it a distinct geo-political location.
As a Middle Eastern member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), it makes it a bridge linking the Arab region and its geographical neighborhood, Europe, Russia and Central Asia. This is from a strategic, political and military point of view, and for considerations that have become very important in light of the Russian-Ukrainian war, but the tremendous progress that Turkey has achieved on the economic level and in the industrial and technological aspects of weapons, surveillance devices and unmanned aerial vehicles (Drones) increases Turkey’s global importance as a country that is coming strongly to arena of world politics.
The fact that the main and major importance from the perspectives of the foreign policy of the UAE is a complex importance from economic, political, military, security and strategic aspects related to restoring balance to the balance of power in the geographical neighborhood of the Arab Gulf region.
For the UAE in particular, Turkey has become important, given that it is in a rapid rise since the end of the Cold War between East and West, the emergence of unrest following the overthrow of the former Shah’s regime in Iran, and then the manifestations of chaos that afflicted many Arab countries and affected some of them.
Turkey has become important to both policy makers and political scientists in the UAE alike, an importance that did not exist in the political arena with this momentum. In my estimation, the reason for this importance is due to the fact that Turkey, until recently, was considered among the countries that are still in the process of developing, but it was able in a relatively short time to achieve impressive economic and development successes that brought it out of the circles of non-growth, and it is now moving to the best quickly. Attractive, so that it can be taken as a role model on many levels. Türkiye now has an experience with which it started in order to write a turning point for itself towards the future. The Turkish experience in walking on the path of development is something that attracts the attention of the UAE, which always seeks to benefit from the successful experiences around it.
