Rapid Support Forces Conflict in Sudan: Devastating Air Strikes and Terrifying Casualty Numbers

The Rapid Support Forces announced in a statement, on Friday, that 26 prisoners of the Sudanese army were killed and wounded, as a result of a raid launched by regular warplanes on one of the headquarters of these forces.

The Rapid Support Forces said in a statement: “In continuation of its series of indiscriminate actions, Al-Burhan Air Force bombed today, one of the headquarters of the Rapid Support Forces, which was designated for the prisoners of those forces, and the aerial bombardment caused the death and injury of 26 prisoners, and the counting operations are still continuing.”

The statement added: “The air strikes also bombed a number of populated neighborhoods in Khartoum and Omdurman, including the Bayt al-Mal neighborhood, in which more than 20 civilians were killed, some of them inside a mosque, and the air strikes also caused great damage to citizens’ homes and public and private property.”

He continued, “The Rapid Support Forces condemn the brutal and horrific actions carried out by the putschists once morest innocent civilians, including killing and destroying infrastructure and demolishing homes.”

Terrifying numbers of conflict victims

  • The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that more than a million children have been displaced in the past two months as a result of the conflict in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, noting that regarding 25 percent of them are in the Darfur region.
  • The organization indicated that it had received reports of “more than 330 children killed and more than 1,900 injured.”
  • The conflict has killed more than 2,000 people, according to the latest figures from the ACLED Incident and Location Data Project.
  • The battles, which continue without any prospect of a solution, have also caused the displacement of more than 2.2 million people, more than 528,000 of whom have sought refuge in neighboring countries, according to the latest data of the International Organization for Migration.
  • The population in Sudan suffers from a shortage of foodstuffs and basic services, especially medical ones, as three quarters of hospitals in combat zones are out of service.
