Cuba-Iran Relations: Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Trade Amidst US Sanctions – Latest Updates 2023

When receiving his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi in Havana, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said that the two countries “faced with heroism and fierce resistance to sanctions, pressures, threats, restrictions and the indifference of US imperialism and its allies.”

In addition to the sanctions, the United States includes both Iran and Cuba in its list of “state sponsors of terrorism”.

The two presidents attended the signing of a memorandum of cooperation in several areas, including customs, communications and the judiciary.

In the morning, Raisi participated in a business forum, during which he announced that Iran would cooperate with Cuba in science and technology, in hydroelectric and thermal power plants, and in the mining sector.

My president concludes his tour in Cuba to “friendly countries” that included Nicaragua and Venezuela, and he stressed that his country faces “common enemies” with them.

The countries included in the tour are all allies of Russia, which is at war with Ukraine.

In Venezuela, the Iranian President and his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolas Maduro, announced the signing of 25 agreements in several fields, from education to mining, to health.

In Nicaragua, the talks included boosting business dealings. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega announced that he and Raisi had signed a “fundamental memorandum” aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fields of science, technology, economy and trade.

In February, Ortega specifically defended Iran’s right to possess nuclear weapons.
