Get one for the humble Xbox One, because the console’s life is finally coming to an end. Well, this might be a little exciting, as some third-party titles will still be released on the system, but Microsoft themselves have officially parted ways with the only half-successful Gen 8 console. During the last Xbox Game Show, all first-party titles only came out on PC and Xbox Series X/S in terms of platforms, but that might have just been a marketing bummer. Sony always emphasizes PS5 in its trailers and marketing…but often quietly releases games on PS4. Don’t expect anything similar with the XB1 in the future.
In a new interview with AxiosMicrosoft has “moved to generation 9,” said Matt Botti, president of Xbox Game Studios. And it seems like he really means it – there’s currently no internal Xbox team working on anything for Xbox One other than updates for long-running live-service titles like The Elder Scrolls Online. Of course, Xbox One owners can still technically access new first-party games if they sign up for Game Pass Ultimate and play through the cloud.
The news that the Xbox One is finally being left behind may upset some who are still clinging to the system, but it will likely bring relief to many others. Due to hardware shortages and the high price of next-gen consoles, the “Crossgen” era, with games being released on both newer-generation and current-gen consoles, has lasted much longer than usual. Too long perhaps, as it arguably limits the potential of titles not yet designed around the limitations of the XB1/PS4. Microsoft’s rival Sony has yet to commit to dropping the PS4 entirely, but many of its upcoming games, like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, are PS5 exclusives.
While Microsoft is leaving the Xbox One behind, don’t expect them to abandon the less powerful Xbox Series S console anytime soon. Booty admitted that running games on the Xbox Series X and S is “more work,” but internal teams have gained more experience working around the limitations and “sharp edges” of the Series S now.
