Nikon has released firmware version 4.00 for its flagship Nikon Z 9 full-frame mirrorless/FX camera. FW Update 4.00 is the third major update for the Z 9 since its launch, bringing further improvements to video and photo capture, usability, usability, autofocus and more.

The free firmware upgrade V 4.00 brings new Smart Auto Capture function, video improvements, shutter sound customization and more to the professional camera

The brand new Auto Capture function enables automatic recording when the subject meets one or more pre-configured criteria, especially in situations that require more automation or when the camera needs to be positioned in places where the user cannot stay for a long time. With the new Auto Capture function, the automatic recording of photos and films is supported by prior configuration of auto capture criteria such as movement, distance or scene recognition. In this way, pictures can be taken both with a remote trigger and from different angles without directly operating the camera. The new function is also available in conjunction with the Pre-Release Capture function, so that the shots are really successful at decisive moments.

photo functions: When taking photos, the performance of 3D tracking when shooting small and fast-moving subjects1 has been improved to give even more precision when shooting small, fast-moving subjects. The new firmware also now allows for the additional Exposure Delay mode in the custom settings menu. This reduces blur caused by camera shake when using a tripod or similar, which is particularly useful in landscape and night sky photography.

video capabilities: In addition, video capabilities have been further enhanced by expanding the minimum ISO sensitivity in N-Log shooting, increasing the number of Hi-Res zoom speed options available to give filmmakers more precise control. Slow motion video recording has also been added. So the minimum ISO sensitivity in N-Log is extended to Low 2 to give the shades more expression. In addition, the number of available Hi-Res zoom speed options is expanded,

service: In addition, with the introduction, the operability and display functions of the Z 9 will be improved. Among other things, more functions can be assigned to the custom controls, an approximate distance can be displayed on the distance scale and a selection of trigger sounds can be selected, the volume of which can be adjusted to suit the respective requirements. The firmware also supports improved usability through a greater number of functions that can be assigned to custom controls and new shutter sound options.

New and improved features

Auto Recording:

  • Users can set the camera to automatically capture photos or videos by pre-configuring the auto capture criteria. The three configurable criteria include one [Bewegung]-Option that detects subjects making certain movements, a [Entfernung]-Option that starts recording when a subject is within a certain distance range,2 and a [Motiverkennung]-Option that recognizes a person, animal or vehicle in the image. These options can be used either individually or together to automatically trigger recording when the selected criteria are met.
  • This feature allows the user to shoot remotely without having to manually time the shot. So he has more time for other tasks or can use the camera in places where he cannot stay longer, e.g. B. when recording wild animals, leave outside.
If more than one Z 9 is used, one camera can be used for handheld shooting while the user moves from location to location, while the other cameras can be set up for automatic shooting from tripods in fixed locations. Auto Capture also enables multi-angle shooting without the need for the extension cords previously required to control multiple cameras, eliminating the need to worry regarding connections when shooting remotely. This feature can also be used in conjunction with the Pre-Release Capture feature to capture those crucial moments even more reliably.

Advanced video recording features:

  • ISO Lo2.0: ISO sensitivity can now be set as low as Lo 2.0 (ISO 200) with N-Log shooting: ISO sensitivity has been extended in the low range to increase the dynamic range in the shadows and a rich and clear expression of shadow tones to enable, in which the noise is suppressed.
  • Hi-Res zoom speed options: Speed levels have been increased from 3 to 11 for more precise speed control. The zoom speed can now be adjusted even more finely so that the look can be better adapted to the user’s intention, e.g. B. by more stable zooming at lower speeds.
  • Slow motion video function: This new feature enables high-speed recording of videos played back at 1/4 (4×) or 1/5 (5×) the frame rate to create a slow-motion effect.

Additional recording improvements:

  • Improved focus: The superior performance of scene recognition with 3D tracking is used to capture photos of small and fast-moving subjects that scene recognition cannot capture.
  • Expansion of the pre-release buffer: To better meet the needs of those working in the field, the amount of time the camera caches images before capturing them during the pre-release capture phase of the high-speed frame capture feature has been increased is increased from 30 to 300 seconds, allowing the user to wait longer between half-pressing and fully pressing the shutter button.
  • exposure delay mode: This option has been added to the Custom Settings menu to reduce camera shake when the shutter button is pressed.
  • More custom controls: The number of functions that can be assigned to the custom controls has been increased, as has the number of controls that can be customized.
  • Improved manual focus UI: The manual focus distance indicator now shows the approximate distance between the camera and the focus position in user-selected units.
  • Customizable trigger sound: User can choose from five types of shutter sounds to be played when the shutter button is released and set a higher volume for the sound.
  • Playback improvements: The new option [Frame advance zoom position], which allows the user to choose how the camera centers the display when scrolling through images during playback zoom, can now be assigned to a custom control. If [Fokuspunkt bevorzugen] is selected, the camera centers the display on the active focus point when the picture was taken. Also, the accuracy of the progress bar displayed during video playback has been improved.
