BCN3D takes a step towards the industrial FFF market with Omega I60

With the Omega I60, BCN3D introduces an FFF 3D printer for industrial applications. The 3D printer has a build volume of 60 liters, a heated printing chamber (up to 70 degrees), a storage space for filament whose temperature and humidity are controlled, and a direct-drive high-speed extruder. It achieves speeds of up to 300 mm/s.

The BCN3D Omega I60 features an updated version of BCN3D’s signature IDEX technology, which doubles productivity by using both heads simultaneously. The Spanish 3D printer manufacturer has set up a launch program in which the first customers work closely with an application engineer from the manufacturer. This supports customers, among other things, in finding the best way to deploy the Omega I60 in their organization.

By keeping the build chamber temperature below 100 degrees C, BCN3D broadens the accessibility of the FFF printer

New step following 10,000 FFF printers sold

BCN3D presented the new 3D printer at a launch event in Barcelona. This happens when the manufacturer has existed for 11 years and has sold more than 10,000 3D printers of the first line, the Epsilon and Sigma series. With the Omega 160, BCN3D takes the step towards industrial applications, such as jigs and fixtures and tailor-made tools for the industry. The new 3D printer has been developed from scratch. For example, the IDEX technology, printing with two heads that move independently of each other, has been further refined. The X-direction drive motor can remain stationary during the printing process.

Less torque, more accuracy

The drive system of the new printer has also been improved compared to the existing model lines. Both pulleys are in a more optimal position, resulting in less torsion of the X-axis during printing. These torsional forces can lead to geometric errors in the X direction, which BCN3D now prevents. Auto-calibration in all three directions is standard. The Omega I60 also features accelerometers and 32-bit electronics along with a modified version of Marlin 2.1. This combination extends the capabilities of the BCN3D Omega I60, allowing it to efficiently produce parts at speeds of up to 300 mm/s and achieve accelerations of 10 m/s².

Conscious choice to keep the temperature at 70 degrees

In practice, the print volume of 60 liters means a maximum building volume of 450 by 350 by 450 mm. In combination with the heated building chamber, this opens up the possibility of printing large, technical parts, for example from ASA, ABS and fibre-reinforced plastics. During the launch, the manufacturer said that a build room with a temperature below 100 degrees C means that the machine is more accessible to a wider target group than a build room with a temperature of 100 degrees C. That high temperature makes the printer very expensive.

Temperature and humidity controlled material

An addition to guarantee consistent quality is the Material Operations System (MOS). This integrated material module controls both the humidity and temperature of the room containing the material spools. MOS offers two main benefits: the ability to restore degraded material and the ability to preheat your filament before printing. This is especially important for engineering materials with higher heat dimensional stability temperatures. In addition, the material control system enables automatic loading and unloading of filament: if the filament runs out during a build job, it is automatically changed. The Omega I60 MOS from BCN3D can reach up to 75ºC and provides a relative humidity of less than 10%.

Fully open machine

In terms of material, the Spanish manufacturer the choice is up to the customer: either choose the Omega materials (including Impact ASA, Omega Resistant Nylon and Omega Tooling CF (and support) or use the Open Filament Network. BCN3D works with material manufacturers to develop the right settings for each material. Then ESD and flame retardant materials are also available. The third option is that users develop their own settings. The Omega 160 is an open printer with no restrictions in terms of filament.

The price tag on the new BCN3D Omega 160 is €19,995 (ex VAT). Delivery will start in September, but customers can sign up for the special launch program.
