ALGIERS – Algeria was unanimously elected as vice-president of the International Grains Council (ICC), following a vote organized by this international body in London, said Thursday a press release from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Organized on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 58th CIC conference, the vote took place in the presence of the chief of staff of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in his capacity as representative of the Minister of the sector, the Director General of the Office Algerian Interprofessional Cereals (OAIC) and the representative of the Algerian Embassy in London, according to the same source.
Algeria holds the vice-presidency of the CIC for the period 2023-2024, the statement said, adding that the presidency is held by the United States, which will hand it over to Algeria once the mandate has expired.
This election “reflects once once more the confidence placed by the member countries in Algeria, given its contribution within the CIC through its commitment to guarantee the stability and efficiency of world grain markets, in addition to its contribution to achieving food security of member countries and expanding consultations between importing and exporting countries”.
Algeria was re-elected in 2023 as a member of the CIC’s Administrative Commission, one of its three main structures, alongside the budget and market requirements commissions.
As a reminder, the CIC is an international governmental organization whose objective is to strengthen international cooperation in the grain trade, contribute to the stability of grain markets and improve global food security.
The CIC is also responsible for implementing the Grains Trade Convention of 1995, in addition to monitoring the development of these markets, and national grain policies.
