“When I create a design, I want it to be practical and functional”

Opposite the American newspaper Newsday chatted John Romita in 2009 and talked regarding the process of creating Wolverine aka Logan.

When the illustrator heard the hero’s name for the first time, he initially thought of a “she-wolf”, as he explained with a laugh. It was initially only given a name in order to work out the design.

But John Romita quickly recognized through the encyclopedia in the office that a wolverine was a small, aggressive cat-like creature with claws.

So John Romita made the character Logan a bit grumpy. In the first draft, the superhero was also a smaller character: “‘He’s wild and small,’ so you make him an angry little guy.”

John Romita also designed the hero’s distinguishing feature: the extendable claws. There was a pragmatic thought behind the special feature. As the artist explained:

When I create a design, I want it to be practical and functional. I thought, ‘If a man has claws like that, how can he scratch his nose or tie his shoelaces?

The character Wolverine then made his first appearance in The Incredible Hulk issue #180 in 1974. The mutant later went on to become one of the Marvel Universe’s most iconic heroes in various X-Men comics and solo appearances.

When the special claws were then implemented in the cinema, the illustrator was very happy: “When I saw the first X-Men film, I sat with it [meiner Frau] Virginia in the cinema. When he retracted his claws for the first time, I almost jumped out of the chair. The biggest kick I got was realizing that something I had created was being used on screen.”

John Romita also gave other characters their well-known suits and distinctive features. So he was the one who designed the Punisher’s skull emblem or designed the super villain Bullseye.
