HOUSTON — Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez might miss at least four weeks with a strained right oblique.
Dana Brown, general manager of the Astros, said Wednesday that the Cuban player underwent an MRI that confirmed the diagnosis.
“That’s why we’re confident that it will come back sometime in the four-plus week period, because the MRI showed a pull,” Brown said. “He is recovering well. He feels great. He doesn’t have pain, not when he coughs. Hopefully it’s a good sign.”
However, Brown recalled that oblique injuries are “misleading.”
“After two weeks we will have a little more information regarding how he feels,” he said. “At the three week mark, we will definitely know more. I hate to put this off, but at the end of the day, sometimes you’re going to have to give those obliques time. Sometimes they heal faster than others, and I think he’s going to be fine. It looks like it will be four weeks, but I think he will be fine.”
Alvarez, second in the majors with 55 RBIs, was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday. He left the game once morest the Blue Jays on Thursday following serving just one at-bat.
The Cuban is hitting .277 with 17 home runs in 57 games this season, following being selected to the All-Star Game for the first time last season.
