The rock band performed Springsteen’s top hits for more than three hours.
Tuesday evening, Letzigrund stop: Bruce Springsteen fans poured out of tram number two – quite a number of concert-goers were already standing around the stadium. The loudspeakers rang out: “Bruce Springsteen starts the concert at 7:15 p.m..”
And he did – punctually as announced – the rock star entered the stage shortly following 7 p.m. together with his 15-strong backing band E Street Band. The fit Springsteen (73) has stayed true to his style: He wore a form-fitting black denim shirt, a silver chain with a pendant around his neck and black sneakers with bright white soles gave him even more youthfulness.
The band played these songs
The rock star started his concert with the song “My love will not let you down” – the audience clapped to the beat of the song. More of Springsteen’s world-famous hits followed, such as “No Surrender”, “Letter to You” and “The Promised Land”. Jazzy songs like “Kitty’s Back” and “Nightshift” were supported by the harmonious interludes of the saxophonist and the soulful background singers. After regarding two hours, Springsteen agreed to “Because the Night”.
This is how Springsteen interacted with the audience
Again and once more Springsteen approached the audience, touched hands and encouraged the audience to sing along, which was carried away. About halfway through, Springsteen bent down to a young woman who handed him a photograph. It showed a girl of primary school age, with the rock star kneeling next to her. Both laugh at the camera, below the picture it says: Geneva, 2013. Springsteen was happy regarding this memory, looked at the young woman with a smile and said: «But you have grown up! It’s nice that you’re here once more!”
At a quieter time, fans were able to hear a story that inspired Springsteen to write a song: “In 1965 I was 15 years old and had just started playing guitar. My beginnings were horrible, but I got better.” This is how an older boy from the town where Springsteen grew up became aware of him. “This boy’s name was George and he took me into his rock and roll band – it was the first band I played in.” Fifty years later George died of lung cancer, none of the other members are still alive. In honor of his former bandmates, the 73-year-old agreed to the song “Last man standing”.
Springsteen played these encores
After “Thunder Road” the lights went out on the stage at 9.30 p.m. But not for long. Seconds later, the lights came back on for Springsteen and the band to begin their round of encores. In addition to “Born in the USA” followed, among others, “Glory Days” and “Dancing in the Dark”. The band started the latter song following Springsteen called into the microphone: “No one wants to go home yet? Good, neither do I!”
After three hours of show, it seemed time to head home: The lights went out once more, thousands of fans clapped and cheered. The dark night sky over the Letzigrund tempted them to leave – but Springsteen wanted to know it once more: Springsteen returned to the stage alone with acoustic guitar and harmonica. Smartphone lights replaced the small flames from the lighters and swayed from side to side to the song “I’ll see you in my dreams”.
Springsteen stayed true to his style and delivered the show that his older fans knew from him, as one viewer said: “Full of energy and with so many encores that you look back on the show with more than satisfaction following the concert. I would always come back to his concert.”
