A Taiwanese fisherman caught the attention of the Taiwanese media following catching an extremely rare goblin shark. According to Taiwanese media on the 14th, the goblin shark, caught by a fisherman living in Suao, Yilan County, Taiwan, was 4.7m long and weighed 800kg, with six babies in its stomach. Caught goblins have translucent skin, a long snout and sharp fangs, giving them a very distinctive appearance.
The goblin shark was sold to the Taiwan Maritime Art Museum in Taoyuan City. The Taiwan Maritime Art Museum said that it bought a goblin shark that would have been sold to a restaurant for food use to make a model for a marine education textbook. The goblin shark, which lives in the deep sea, has existed on Earth for more than 125 million years and is considered a living shark fossil. It is not an endangered species.
The Yilan County Government’s Maritime and Fisheries Development Research Institute said that goblins are distributed in temperate and tropical waters at a depth of 200 meters, and that they are relatively rare even if they are not protected species, and do not recommend catching them. When it was also reported that the goblin was caught by a trawler, controversy arose over the method of capture. This is because they caught unnecessary non-target fish species by scraping deep into the sea with huge nets.
Taiwan has not outright banned the use of trawlers. The relevant law stipulates that trawlers of 50 tons or more are prohibited from fishing within 12 miles of the coast.
