Marrakech – Participants in a panel organized as part of the Bloomberg New Economy Gateway Africa Conference, focused on Wednesday in Marrakech on the challenges of establishing a food self-sufficiency system in Africa.

“Several countries on the Continent have long suffered from famine and undernourishment. However, decades later, Africa is still far from achieving its food self-sufficiency”, were unanimous in underlining the speakers during a panel held under the theme “Food security: building a self-sufficient food system”, organized in the framework of the Bloomberg Conference (June 13 and 14).

In this context, they pointed out that the conflict in Ukraine has revealed the Continent’s dependence on imports of cereals and other foodstuffs, believing that aid (donations) will hardly solve this problem in Africa, Continent endowed with enormous agricultural potential, with large unexploited agricultural areas, and important rivers.

The speakers agree to recognize that the Continent is able to achieve its food self-sufficiency, through the encouragement of investment in this vital sector, emphasizing the convergence of the approaches of African countries in the field of Food Safety.

Regarding trade between African countries, the panelists did not fail to underline the need to strengthen cooperation and promote the conclusion of free trade agreements in the Continent, noting that African countries have great potential, even to achieve complementarity in the field of food.

In this context, they noted the imperative for African countries to mobilize local resources and provide appropriate solutions to be able to meet their food needs, particularly in the current context marked by an outbreak of prices of food products at the global level, claiming to be in favor of the promotion and enhancement of local foodstuffs .

Similarly, they highlighted the efforts made by governments and the private sector to pave the way for foreign investors wishing to invest in the agricultural sector in Africa, suggesting that they draw inspiration from and benefit from the expertise of pioneering countries. in the area of ​​food safety.

The first African edition of the Bloomberg New Economy is held under the theme “Gateway Africa”, at the initiative of the media group Bloomberg, leader in economic and financial information, in partnership with the Moroccan Agency for the Development of Investments and Exports (AMDIE).

After an American and European stage, it is Morocco that has been designated host country for the African version of this economic forum, on the strength of its position as a regional leader thanks to the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
