As is tradition, the Apple is updating its vast library of symbols following the WWDC23. The application SF Symbols 5 arrives with over 700 new symbols, some improved tools and a new feature to make them even more customizable and dynamic.
Introducing a new concept for symbols, SF Symbols now brings the feature Animation, which makes it possible to apply customizable animations to provide a “new dimension of expression” to symbols. You can apply various behaviors such as jumping, climbing, pulsing, etc.
These animated effects and transitions bring vitality to interfaces and provide feedback to user input while communicating changes in status and ongoing activity.
According to Apple, the symbols have been “redesigned and optimized for motion”, with layers that move as part of the implemented effects and transitions.
The designer/developer will be able to choose from a collection of different animation presets — each with unique characteristics — and they will work on all available symbols, scales and rendering modes.
As for the new symbols available, there are news such as automotive indicators, symbols to represent buttons for game controls, as well as locators in Arabic, Chinese, Devanagari, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Latin and Thai.
You’ll also be able to create custom icons more easily with a new library of badges, shapes and bars that can be added to symbols created by developers/designers themselves.
There are also updates to some tools and the arrival of a new inspector that will allow you to view animations for both system and custom symbols.
SF Symbols 5, as well as animation features, will be available for apps that will run on Apple’s future systems: iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma 14, watchOS 10 and tvOS 17.
