A 54-year-old man died last Thursday following swallowing bacteria-contaminated raw oysters bought from a seafood stand in the US state of Missouri.
«[La bactérie] Vibrio vulnificus can be found in warm coastal waters, usually during the summer months. People commonly get sick from consuming raw or undercooked oysters and other shellfish,” St. Louis County said in a statement Friday.
Urging citizens to exercise caution when consuming seafood, the county confirmed the death of a 54-year-old man Thursday, who had consumed raw oysters from Fruit Stand & Seafood the previous week.
At present, authorities are reportedly trying to determine the source of the contaminated seafood, and are warning citizens not to consume oysters purchased from the stand.
The bacterium, which does not cause any change in the taste, smell and appearance of the oyster, is thought to cause more than 80,000 infections and around 100 deaths each year, according to data from the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Disease Prevention (CDC), reported by “The Independent” on Tuesday.
Last year, two people are said to have died of the bacteria following consuming raw oysters in Florida.
And due to climate change and warming water, it is expected to become more prevalent around New York, according to a scientific study published in the journal “Nature” this year.
