This Tuesday, in an interview with Parisian, the Minister of Health François Braun unveiled a list of 450 essential therapeutic molecules in order to secure their supply. Drug stocks will be closely monitored but the situation is alarming according to oncologist David Khayat, guest of Classic Radio.

“Amoxicillin, flu vaccines, curare for anesthesia, cancer drugs but also paracetamol. » The list unveiled by the Minister of Health François Braun is bloated: 450 drugs have been placed under close surveillance.

For several years, France has been facing stock shortages on several treatments, “once said of comfort”, explains David Khayat. But, these periods are accelerating and now affect drugs intended for the general public. “The situation is becoming alarming with the shortage of anti-cancer drugs”lamented the professor of medicine.

David Khayat: “We touch the heart of humanity and the human”

Developed in consultation with medical specialists, the list disclosed by the government is “dramatic” for the future of health in France, notes the guest of Guillaume Durand. “If there is no amoxicillin, we can give another antibiotiche recalls. But, now, we are starting to run out of anti-cancer drugs: we are talking regarding patients who are sometimes close to death”.

Since the Covid crisis, which highlighted the structural shortcomings of health in France, shortages have experienced an unprecedented increase: some 3,700 drugs have been missed this winter, a figure which has tripled in space. 3 years (89 in 2010) according to the ANSM.

The inaccessibility of certain molecules in pharmacies has become a catchphrase. By analogy to the supply difficulties in other sectors, the automobile in particular, the oncologist recalled that drug shortages should not be underestimated: “There, we touch the heart of humanity”. This industry is strategic.

The shortage of medicines affects all Western countries

Hoping that the Macron government has ” Finally “ taken head-on with this question, the founder of the National Cancer Institute evoked the equally dramatic situation on the other side of the Atlantic: “This situation is not unique to France. In the United States, they are almost drawing lots who will benefit from chemotherapy treatment..

” How did we get there ? », asks Guillaume Durand. Blame it on the increase in demand with the virulent triple epidemic of Covid, influenza and bronchiolitis this winter, on the tensions on the drug market (in 30 years, the production of 80% of the active ingredients has been relocated to Asia ), and increases in the price of raw materials “related to the war in Ukraine” .

Above all, David Khayat blamed pharmaceutical companies and their constant pursuit of profits: “The common point between all these drugs is that they are very unprofitable. These are old drugs for which there are many generics”.

More than a necessity, the announcement of a plan to relocate essential drugs by President Emmanuel Macron during his trip to Ardèche, is « vitale ».
