HOUSTON — Mauricio Dubón, Kyle Tucker, Martín Maldonado and Chas McCormick homered to back up a strong start from rookie Hunter Brown, and the Houston Astros beat the Washington Nationals 6-1 on Tuesday.
The night provided several hitting milestones for Latin American players in Houston.
José Abreu had two hits and reached 1,501 in his career, becoming the 21st active player with 1,500 and the twelfth Cuban to do so. Maldonado’s home run extended Houston’s lead to 3-0 and was the 100th of his life.
José Altuve walked that inning and scored his 1,000th career run on Abreu’s single.
Brown (6-3) allowed four hits spread out over seven scoreless innings. He had lost two starts in a row.
Dubón of Honduras put the Astros up 1-0, finding a changeup from Patrick Corbin (4-7) and putting the ball in the left field seats with no outs in the fifth inning.
There was one out in the inning when Tucker hit his ninth home run of the season, to right field, to make it 2-0.
It was the Nationals’ first visit to Houston since they won the only championship in their history, beating the Astros 6-2 in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series.
Corbin was on the mound for that game as well. He pitched three shutout innings in relief and got the win.
On Tuesday, he struggled with control, giving away a season-high five walks. He allowed four hits and two runs in five innings.
