prima la musica is Austria’s largest youth music competition for classical music, in which children and young people (up to the age of 21) compete solo or in an ensemble in various instrument categories and age groups. The competition is held annually at state and federal level. The best participants in the state competition will then be invited to the national competition.
In particular, Lower Austrian musicians were awarded five out of twelve first prizes in the oboe (solo) category. Four musicians who were named national winners, among them Lucia Naima Wuinovic from the music school in the market town of Wiener Neudorf, stood out in particular.
The 17-year-old talent has always been enthusiastic regarding the oboe. Even if there were no oboes in the (wind) elementary school class in Babenbergergasse in Mödling “at that time because the instrument was considered too complicated. But I was fascinated. In the beginning, I composed a short piece for my teacher every week, staged with colorful animal faces as note heads and short lyrics,” Wuinovic recalls. “As time went on, my ambition grew. With all sorts of different etudes and pieces each week, I continued to make progress. Experience in ensembles was also a must. I played in a woodwind quintet, trios and numerous orchestras, at trade fairs, vernissages, openings of culture days and a wide variety of concerts.”
The newly crowned national winner is also particularly grateful to “my teacher at the music school in Wiener Neudorf, Heike Sauer-Chalier. She has ideas for new projects and competitions and is an incredible support for me”. The talent promotion program of the state of Lower Austria also makes it possible “to get an increased number of lessons”. As if that weren’t enough, Wuinovic honed her oboe skills at the music high school in Vienna, attended piano lessons and took part in workshops at the music university, such as reed making, composition and performance coaching.
Wuinovic has been taking part in prima la musica every year since 2016 and “was forwarded to the national competition every time”, is a member of the Lower Austrian Youth Symphony Orchestra and has the Gold Badge of Excellence from the Austrian Brass Band Association.
Wuinovic has “not yet clearly defined concrete future career plans. At the moment I’m already studying in the preparatory course at the music university. I am also interested in other courses. I would like to diversify my future a bit, which is why I am currently aiming for law in addition to studying music”.
Sauer-Chalier is enthusiastic: “Lucia Wuinovic has been studying with me at the music school in Wiener Neudorf since September 2015. Her great talent was immediately apparent. She comes to my lessons several times a week, and she also has weekly lessons with Prof. Hörth at the Music University.” For teachers, “such exceptional students are a great pleasure. The progress is just immense. With these children in particular, it is important to find the right balance between being over-challenged and under-challenged. In any case, we are doing very well at the moment,” Sauer-Chalier is satisfied.
