Dutch CO2 emissions in the first three months of this year were 3.3 percent lower than in the same period last year. This is mainly because we have used less natural gas, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands.
Gas was extremely expensive last year because the supply from Russia stopped. Businesses and households were faced with sky-high energy bills. As a result, the thermostat went down in many homes.
Transport in the Netherlands actually caused more emissions in the first quarter. Aviation played an important role in this. In the first months of last year, it was still partly at a loss due to corona restrictions, but that hardly played a role last winter. Emissions therefore rose by more than 18 percent. In addition, we spent more time in the car, which also led to more CO2 emissions.
Statistics Netherlands also looked at the emissions of all greenhouse gases together. In addition to CO2, this also includes methane. Greenhouse gas emissions combined were 4 percent lower in the previous quarter than one year previously.
In addition to the decrease in gas consumption by households and businesses, agriculture also resulted in fewer emissions. Emissions from the agricultural sector fell by 3 percent. The fact that this decrease remains limited is partly due to the fact that greenhouse horticulture was already quite economical with energy in the first quarter of last year.
Emissions from power producers remained regarding the same. Although power stations used less natural gas, this was offset by an increase in coal use.
