Blogger Poisoned by Agave: The Dangers of Misinformation and Clickbait in Social Media

In her quest for high viewership, a blogger known as Mrs. Chang decides to promote the benefits of agave, only to end up poisoned in a hospital’s emergency department.

A social media vlogger who calls herself “Mrs. Shang” poisoned herself while eating what she thought was a healthy aloe vera.

Chang was recording a segment on the plant’s health benefits when she took a bite of what was actually the Agave Americana plant and poisoned herself.

In the video Zhang posted, she filmed herself trying to convey a sense of pleasure from a bite of spicy cactus, as she exclaimed, “This is amazing.” But that pleasure quickly turned into a feeling of numbness in her mouth and a burning sensation in her throat that seemed to be “on fire” and she had to go to the hospital.

Zhang later told Motherboard that she noticed a bitter taste following eating the aloe vera, as she went to the hospital with burns and sores in her mouth. There, her stomach was washed and she is now in a stable condition.

According to IFL Science, the supposed health benefits of aloe vera are actually not that clear. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, “there is insufficient evidence to prove whether aloe vera is beneficial for most of the purposes that people use it for.”

The American agave is grown in Mexico and North America, and is commonly used as an ornamental plant, although it is poisonous.

This incident comes following two “Bloggers” bloggers died on the TikTok platform for carrying out food experiments or an eating challenge, which led to their immediate death during registration.

These incidents are repeated, in which bloggers compete to obtain the highest viewership, with the aim of increasing their income, which comes from social entertainment platforms.
