There are more and more people who believe that clothes should be washed less – or not at all. A new movement has started among environmentalists: no wash.
It is no longer a new thing that jeans need to be washed infrequently, as soap and water soften the jeans and the contrasting patterns fade. The CEO of the jeans manufacturing company Levi’s also believes in this principle. But how do you clean a dirty garment? Instead of immediately rushing to the washing machine, jeans wearers choose other methods of care, such as UV rays or simply airing out at night.
Now, however, the followers of no wash denim not only do not wash jeans, but also other items of clothing. In 2019, designer Stella McCartney made headlines when she told the Guardian: “Basically, the rule in life is: if you don’t absolutely have to wash something, then don’t wash it. I wouldn’t change my bra every day or throw it in the washing machine just because it’s already dirty. I’m incredibly hygienic myself, but I’m not a fan of dry cleaning, or really any cleaning.”
Others are rethinking their laundry habits because of environmental protection or rising electricity costs. Mac Bishop, founder of clothing company Wool & Prince, explained that the “for comfort and minimalism” emphasized what male consumers really like – “especially for those who didn’t like washing in the first place”. Because women have been bombarded with sexist laundry ads for centuries, they would be less receptive to the idea of not washing their clothes, she reasoned, and research has shown that environmentalism is a more effective argument for women than comfort.
But what regarding smells?
By now, many of you have probably wondered what regarding smells? After all, it may happen that a piece of clothing is not dirty, but we sweat in it. Many of the followers of the no wash movement spray the clothes with vinegar and vodka – mostly the underarm area, and then hang them out to air out overnight. According to supporters of the initiative, neglecting washing also extends the life of the garment, and you can save an amazing amount of money on energy, water and detergent.
According to Mark Sumner, a lecturer in sustainable fashion at the University of Leeds, garments can tear, shrink and lose color during washing. with his colleague, Mark Taylorral Sumner studies how microfibers from household laundry end up in marine animals. Although he believes that reducing the frequency of washing clothes is the right decision for the environment, he does not support a complete washing machine moratorium.
“We don’t want people to think they can’t wash things because… they’re destroying the planet” Sumner told BBC Culture. The university professors also said that they think balance is important. In addition, people with certain health problems need to wash their clothes regularly for hygiene reasons.
At the same time, no wash believers claim that it is better to avoid constant washing in terms of sustainability. Several people also highlighted the lack of time, since “who has time to do laundry?”.
