The SolarCell remote control, launched in a first version in 2021, is one of the great examples of an initiative aligned with the environmental strategy announced by Samsung in 2022 to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050. Along with efforts aimed at more sustainable dynamics, such as the expansion of the use of recycled materials in plastic parts (by 2030, Samsung intends to manufacture these parts with at least 50% recycled material), the brand has developed a new version of SolarCell, 25% smallerand which comes with all 2023 models of Samsung Smart TVs.

Created to reduce the environmental impact caused by discarding used batteries, SolarCell was the first rechargeable remote control launched for the TV market, with a small panel that absorbs energy from sunlight or ambient lighting, in addition to the option of charging via USB-C cable. This means that, annually, millions of batteries are no longer used.1 and, consequently, are not discarded incorrectly in the wild. Another feature of this Samsung remote control is low energy consumption, as it was designed to work with regarding 10% of the energy that conventional remote controls use.

Additionally, 24% of the plastics used in the SolarCell remote control come from recycled materials, meaning more than six tons of waste are recycled to produce 10 million remotes annually – equivalent to an approximate 18% reduction in emissions. of carbon compared to production from conventional materials.
