The Secretary of State for Digitization and the Protection of Privacy, Mathieu Michel, in collaboration with the FPS Strategy and Support (Bosa), wants to set up more transparent communication around the use of personal data by Belgian administrations with the third phase of Operation Transparency launched on Tuesday, he said at a press conference.
Concretely, the citizen can now go to the site mydata.belgium.be to see the authority or institution that received their data as well as the identity of the authority or institution that sent them, i.e. the source. The category of data as well as the date of consultation are also indicated. For now, only data that goes through the federal service integrator, the Bosa, can be consulted. Consultations that do not pass through the integrator and consultations within the framework of a judicial or police investigation are therefore not included.
For the Secretary of State, this operation is part of a desire for trust between the citizen and the administrations around the use of data. “We are convinced that this state of mind will extend beyond service integrators”, explains the liberal. The operation is also a function of the citizen’s digital wallet, which includes all their data and which should see the light of day at the end of the year, just like the last stage of Operation Transparency, which began two years ago.
The first stage of the Operation was a cadastre of the data, the second a list of authentic sources and the third launched on Tuesday, a report showing who consulted the data and when. The fourth and last will allow the citizen to have an overview of their personal data present in different authentic sources and the reason for which they are kept there.
