Brunner/Tursky: Digital skills package strengthens digital skills throughout Austria

The “Digital Skills Austria” strategy brings a comprehensive package from workshops for basic digital skills to a uniform competency framework for digital skills.

Vienna (OTS) – Use the opportunities of digitization with better digital skills: This is the declared goal of the new strategy “Digital Skills Austria” as part of the “Digital Skills Offensive for Austria”, which was launched today by Federal Minister Magnus Brunner and State Secretary Florian Tursky at the Digital Skills Summit together with experts and was presented to stakeholders from all over Austria.

The core of the strategy, which was developed in a broad stakeholder process with more than 500 experts and stakeholders in all federal states, is the “digital competence package for Austria”. It is intended to strengthen digital skills throughout Austria through targeted measures in strategic priority areas – from basic digital skills for the general public to top digital qualifications for the economy.

Great leverage by bundling all forces

“With our digital competence package, we are opening a new chapter in Austrian digitization policy. We are thus pooling all our strengths, putting them on a common basis and providing targeted impetus for more digital skills throughout Austria,” said Federal Minister Magnus Brunner. For State Secretary Florian Tursky, the competence package as the heart of the “Digital Skills Austria” strategy is a decisive lever for further developing digital skills in a targeted manner. “The competence package has something for everyone: from beginners to professionals. From on-site workshops in the community to Ph.D.”, says Tursky.

Strategic priorities and measures for all of Austria

The competence package brings a total of eight strategic priorities to Austria:

1. Austria will receive a national competence framework for digital competences, which will be introduced jointly.

2. Low-threshold offers are further developed in a target group-oriented manner. This is done with the workshop program “Digital Everywhere” for basic skills in every community in Austria and with the development program “Digital Everywhere PLUS”.

3. In order to support actors in the educational landscape in teaching digital skills, there are training courses and workshops for adult education institutions, IT trainers and multipliers.

4. For the best possible use of existing resources, best practices for teaching digital skills are identified, scaled and offered nationwide.

5. As an education provider, the public sector should implement its role model role in the teaching of digital skills. The national reference framework will be introduced at the finance academy and the administration academy, among others.

6. In order to counteract the shortage of IT specialists, a funding call for IT experts will support innovative implementation ideas to combat the shortage of IT specialists.

7. The spread of AI in the world of work should be accompanied by cross-departmental measures on the topic of “digital skills and AI”. To this end, experts are developing recommendations and a roadmap.

8. Austria’s pioneering role in teaching and recognizing digital skills is also reflected in its participation in international initiatives. For example, Austria is involved in piloting the European Digital Skills Certificate (EDSC).

“With the skills package for digital skills, we are providing strong impetus and concrete incentives for all stakeholders to further develop the digital skills that are important for successful digitization on the basis of a uniform skills framework. The whole of Austria benefits from this – this brings the location and its competitiveness further in the long term,” conclude Brunner and Tursky.
