Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday that Russia launched a “massive missile attack” last night on the city of Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine, killing at least 3 people, wounding 25 and damaging civilian infrastructure.
Serhiy Lysak, governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, where Kirvyi Rih is located, said on the Telegram application that rescue operations are taking place at a burning 5-storey residential building and at a destroyed warehouse.
“There are still people under the rubble,” he added.
He gave preliminary information regarding the number of victims and published a picture of a residential building with smoke billowing from some of its shattered windows.
Oleksandr Vilkol, mayor of Kryvyi Rih, said at least seven people were believed to be trapped under the rubble, but gave no further details.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was born in Kryvyi Rih, condemned the attack on his hometown.
“Russian killers continue their war on residential buildings, on ordinary cities and on people,” he said on Telegram.
During the early hours of Tuesday morning, sirens sounded across Ukraine warning of air strikes, and military officials in Kiev said air defense forces had destroyed all Russian missiles targeting the Ukrainian capital.
Ukraine’s top military command said the air force had destroyed 10 out of 14 cruise missiles launched by Russia at Ukraine and one of 4 Iranian-made drones.
It is not yet clear how many missiles hit Kryvyi Rih, nor what sites and targets were hit by the drones launched by Russia.
Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia waged on its neighbor regarding 16 months ago.
The mayor of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine said on his Telegram channel that Russian drones struck civilian infrastructure in the city, hitting a warehouse and a building for a service company.
