From that moment the construction of the other type of State began, which differed significantly of the Soviet system.

In order to achieve the full and secure establishment of a sovereign country with its own independent institutions, the RSFSR government had to resolve an enormous number of issues. The agenda included not only the need to elect the first president, but also to define the name of the country and fix everything in an organic law. As a consequence, the adoption of the Russian Federation or Russia as the name of the State, together with the elaboration of the Constitution, represent crucial milestones on the path of its strengthening.

A year later, on June 12, 1991, the first direct and open national presidential elections in history were held, which were won by Boris Yeltsin (1991-1999).

However, this date did not immediately become known in society as Russia Day. First, in May 1991, a decree of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR declared the date of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Federation—June 12—as simple Holiday.

Later, in June 1992, this day was first given the status of a holiday, and in 1994, by presidential decree, the Day of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Russia was declared a holiday to Nacional level.

It was not until 2002 when it was finally adopted. the official name and now widely known of the Day of Russia for June 12, when the new Labor Code of Russia came into force, which stipulated new holidays and long weekends.

This date is traditionally celebrated with massive festivities, sporting events and concerts. In 2022, more than 3.5 million people from all over the country participated in the Russia Day celebrations. In all its regions there were concerts, festivals and fireworks.
