If you have anxiety issues or low spirits, here are the foods you should add to your diet.
According to Dr. Caitlin Hall, gut health expert and chief dietitian at Myota, you should try to avoid certain foods, such as sweets, as they may impact your mood.
“While it’s tempting to turn to our favorite sweets or take-out meals when we’re not feeling our best, these foods can make our condition worse in the long run by raising our blood sugar levels and by harming the delicate balance of bacteria in our gut,” the expert said.
She recommends foods called psychobiotics “because of their impact on our mental health”. Try adding the following foods to your diet to improve your mood.
fermented foods
Fermented foods, such as tempeh, kombucha, and pickles, contain live cultures of good bacteria that can help “regulate the production of stress hormones (like cortisol) and mood hormones ( like serotonin),” she said.
Prebiotic fibers
You should also try to increase your intake of foods such as onions, oats, asparagus and garlic. These foods are rich in prebiotic fiber, which can help improve mood and reduce stress.
The dietitian explains that “this fiber helps nourish beneficial gut bacteria and produce anti-inflammatory substances called short-chain fatty acids, which can interact with the brain and promote mental well-being.”
Omega-3 fatty acids
Foods such as salmon, sardines, chia seeds, and nuts are a great addition to the diet because they are high in omega-3 fatty acids.
“Omega-3s are essential for brain health and may help reduce symptoms of certain mental disorders,” she said.
