A new General Product Safety Regulation (GSPR) came into force on Monday across the European Union (EU), with the aim of ensuring the safety of all consumer products on the market. of the union, says the European Commission.

This regulation, which applies to non-food products, whether sold in stores or online, provides consumers with a “real safety net” guaranteeing product safety and protecting risks that are not regulated by other EU legislation, explains the Commission in a press release.

The new rules are intended to respond to major societal changes that have impacted the safety of consumer products over the past two decades, such as increasing digitalisation, the evolution of new technologies and the globalization of supply chains, says the EU executive.

“Through this modernized framework, only safe products will be offered to consumers, regardless of the origin of the products and whether they are sold in stores or in online marketplaces,” the statement said.

The new regulation integrates key elements such as the scalability of a product or its interconnectivity into the safety assessment of consumer products, while setting specific product safety requirements for online marketplaces .

Likewise, the text extends the obligation, for all non-harmonised products imported into the EU, to have an economic operator in the EU responsible for product safety issues, in addition to improving the effectiveness of recalls of products by requiring the establishment of direct contacts for consumers and standardized recall notices.
