Senegal announced, Friday, June 9 in a press release, the resumption of the activities of its consulates abroad, closed four days earlier following a “series of attacks recently perpetrated once morest the diplomatic and consular missions of Senegal abroad , notably in Paris, Bordeaux, Milan and New York.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad explains that “this recovery will be done taking into account the state of degradation of the equipment and the premises with regard to the consulates having suffered acts of vandalism”.

In its press release announcing the closure of the consulates, the Senegalese ministry indicated that these acts of aggression “resulted in serious damage, particularly to the Consulate General of Senegal in Milan where the machines for producing passports and national identity cards were destroyed. “.

Now, the same source invites Senegalese residing abroad “to contribute to the safeguarding of structures and the preservation of the physical integrity of staff members who are at the service of the community”.

It should be remembered that this violence, also recorded on national territory, was provoked by the legal setbacks of opponent Ousmane Sonko, sentenced on June 1 to two years in prison for having pushed to “debauchery” a young woman under 21 years old.

During the Council of Ministers of June 7, the Senegalese President, Macky Sall had ordered “the opening of immediate and systematic judicial inquiries to shed light on the responsibilities linked to these events” which had caused 16 deaths in Dakar and Ziguinchor ( south), following having reiterated “its determination to protect the Nation, the State, the Republic, its values, and its foundations”.
