Are you losing more hair than normal? This phenomenon might be a sign of a rather serious health problem. Explanations.
It is normal to lose your hair. On the other hand, if you lose a lot more hair than normal when you comb your hair, it’s time to worry because hair loss is a little-known symptom of diabetes. In total, there are two main types. The first is an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of certain pancreatic cells responsible for producing insulin. The second is much more common. People who have it secrete insulin, but this hormone regulates the level of sugar in their blood with less efficiency. This level, called blood sugar, remains abnormally high following a meal.
Concretely, these high levels of sugar can damage the blood vessels and these play an essential role in hair growth. As explained in Sun Dr. Greg Vida, surgeon at Harley Street Hair Clinic, they carry oxygen and damaged blood vessels may no longer be able to supply enough oxygen to nourish the hair follicles.
While our normal hair growth cycle usually goes through three phases (the active growth phase, the resting phase and the falling phase), diabetes can therefore interrupt this process. And although high blood sugar levels do not completely halt the growth cycle, people with the condition may notice that they are losing hair faster than they are growing, and in greater amounts.

How to reverse this phenomenon?
Note that some people with diabetes may also suffer from a condition called alopecia areata. A more common situation in people with type 1 diabetes that causes patchy hair loss on the head, arms and other parts of the body.
To reverse hair loss, the GP can work with the person with diabetes on blood sugar control. But if hair still isn’t growing back despite blood sugar control, she may consider certain medications such as finasteride or minoxidil, which are typically used to treat male pattern baldness.
