The resumption of construction of Shin Hanul Nuclear Power Units 3 and 4, a key national task of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, is accelerating.
The government held the 73rd Power Development Project Promotion Committee today (12th) at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Sejong City, and deliberated and decided on the ‘approval (draft) of the implementation plan for the power development project for Shin Hanul Nuclear Power Units 3 and 4’.
Approval of the implementation plan for Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 was completed 11 months following the official resumption of construction in the ‘new government energy policy direction’ in July ’22.
As a result, 20 approval procedures under the jurisdiction of 11 ministries required for nuclear power plant construction were processed collectively.
This shortened the schedule by regarding 19 months compared to the average implementation plan approval period of the previous three nuclear power plant construction projects, which took 30 months.
Now, once the construction permit under the Nuclear Safety Act, which is the last step, is completed, the construction of the reactor facility will begin in earnest.
According to the implementation plan, the scale of the construction project for Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 is KRW 11.7 trillion, and currently, according to the 10th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand, Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 are targeted for completion in 2032 and 2033, respectively.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. is planning to start site grading work immediately following approval of the execution plan, and plans to quickly proceed with construction contracts for auxiliary equipment and main equipment following the main equipment contract signed in March and which began production.
A 2.9 trillion won main equipment contract was signed between KHNP and Doosan Enerbility, and funds are being executed according to the down payment and completion. It will be continuously supplied.
In addition, construction contracts for a consortium of construction companies are scheduled to begin in earnest following the approval of the implementation plan, which is expected to greatly contribute to the revitalization of the construction industry and the local economy.
In addition, following the 2030s, it is expected to play a role as an important power supply source in response to the expansion of electric vehicles and the increase in power demand in high-tech industries.
