Today’s diet is characterized by excessive sugar and carbohydrate consumption. In the editorial of the current Prophylaxe Journal, Univ.-Prof. dr Thorsten M. Auschill gives the readers an insight into the topic of nutrition, the psyche and oral hygiene.

Dear Colleagues,

It is well known and has been scientifically proven for a long time that an “incorrect” diet can lead to defects in the hard tooth structure and to diseases of the periodontium. At the latest in kindergarten, children and parents are told that foods with a high sugar content, i.e. short-chain carbohydrates, can attack and damage teeth. If you look at the epidemiological data, you can proudly see that prophylaxis is working and the number of caries-free children has doubled in the last 20 years. So far so good! But what regarding a healthy diet? Can eating habits lead to a positive support for periodontitis therapy, for example? Speaking of periodontitis: This is exactly where you should start. Although the number of severe periodontitis cases is declining, the need for treatment is increasing due to demographic developments. So how can proteins, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, minerals, vitamins and even carbohydrates help us to improve periodontal health? As early as 2011, Tonetti & Chapple pointed out how eating habits can have a positive influence on periodontitis therapy. Are we smarter more than ten years later?

In this Journal you have the opportunity to expand your knowledge in the field of healthy nutrition, the connection between oral health and psyche and the use of mouthwash solutions in PA therapy, to question current actions and to refine your treatment concept. I wish you a lot of fun in your daily work and in further education.

Sincerely,

Your Thorsten Auschill
