DrIt will come as a surprise to many to know that there is a jungle and an abandoned ancient palace near the Raisina Hill where the administrative centers are located in Lehi. It is a palace called Malcha Mahal built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th century. Today, the palace is visited only by rare travelers and researchers in search of abandoned ‘ghost houses’. The wildness of the forest, the eerie atmosphere and the mysterious past make a visit to Malcha Mahal an unforgettable experience.
Malcha Mahal is located just 1.5 km from Delhi Chanakyapuri Road. The stone-built palace is now in a dilapidated state. This palace was the hunting lodge of the Tughluq Sultans in the 14th century. This building was built in memory of a nomadic woman who nursed Feroz Shah Tughlaq who lost his way while he was out hunting in the forest. Later it became the residence of Awadh rulers. With the death of the last member of the dynasty, this historic building was abandoned.
Begum Vilayat, the self-proclaimed granddaughter of Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of the Awadh dynasty, and her children lived a hellish life here. This building was in the news when Begum Vilayat and her children came to live here in the early 1980s. Begum Vilayat and her children started a strike in the rest room of the Delhi railway station, demanding the property of the Awadh dynasty. Finally the palace in the forest was given away by the government for accommodation.
They lived a poor and isolated life with memories of royal life. Begum committed suicide in 1993. Soon the daughter also died. His son, who became a mental patient, led a completely isolated life here. In 2017, when he was found dead in this palace, Malcha Mahal was once more abandoned. Later it became a haven for wild animals and anti-socials. It is frequented by dark tourists and historical researchers who visit isolated haunted houses. After clamoring to restore and preserve the Malcha Mahal, the state government is taking steps to take it over.
