A stupid gesture that might cost him dearly. A Japanese student has been sued by a restaurant chain specializing in sushi, accused of having caused him to lose more than 106 million euros, reports Japanese public television NHK.
The Akindo Sushiro company is claiming around 450,000 euros (67 million yen) from him following he posted a video on social media in which he is seen licking a bottle of soy sauce, before placing it back on a moving conveyor belt throughout the restaurant and accessible to all customers. Moments later, he licks his finger and touches one of the sushi scrolls before his eyes.
A new case of “sushi terrorism”, a term used in Japan to describe the multiple malicious acts on the part of customers in very widespread conveyor belt restaurants. A real “social problem” in the country, underlines NHK.
The company’s shares fall on the stock market
The company claims in its lawsuit filed with the Osaka court that posting the video on social media led to a drastic drop in customer numbers at its restaurants nationwide.

The student’s gesture also sent shares of the restaurant’s parent, Food & Live Companies, plummeting. In total, Akindo Sushiro claims to have lost 16 billion yen in this case, or just over 106 million euros in turnover.
The defendant’s lawyer asked the court in May to dismiss the complaint. In his letter, the lawyer explains that his client has recognized the facts and regrets them. He also points to increased competition in the restaurant industry to justify declines in footfall at the Akindo Sushiro chain.
