(CNN) Norway’s Norwegian seismological research institute “NORSA” reported that it detected an explosion at the site by the 11th at the time of the first report that the Kahouka dam in Kherson province in southern Ukraine had collapsed. bottom.

The head of the institute said in a telephone interview with CNN. In response to this report, he explained that he investigated the observation data and tried to understand whether it was an explosion or the gradual deterioration of the dam structure.

As a result, they found data indicating that explosions occurred at or near dams.

Residents near the dam wrote on social media that the explosion occurred between 2:18 a.m. and 2:20 a.m. local time on the 6th of this month. A video of the site located by CNN showed a small explosion, probably around 2:46 a.m., at a dam that had already been damaged.

According to NORSAR, a tremor close to magnitude (M) 2 was observed around 2:54 am. The person in charge said it was not too strong, but it was a sizeable tremor.

However, it is unclear whether this event detected by the institute was the main cause of the dam’s collapse.

NORSAR uses triangulation to measure distances between earthquakes and associated data collection facilities.

He also pointed out that the explosive tremors detected by the research institute around 2:54 a.m. on the 6th were caused by man-made factors. He pointed out that when an earthquake occurs in the natural world, “usually there is movement in the previous stage before the actual event comes.”

In addition, the explosion was characterized by a sudden, very rapid explosion and a gradual weakening, although the ground was calm.

Both Ukraine and Russia have blamed the other for the dam collapse.
