Ferrari problems create tension

As dramatic as the problems on the Ferrari are, they make the race unexpectedly exciting. Because the #51 was clearly the faster car. Although Pier Guidi is now on the road once more, there is a risk of further trouble. Apparently the radio is disrupted, the box cannot hear the driver.

Problems with the Ferrari

Alessandro Pier Guidi does not get the Ferrari #51 started directly following a pit stop. The lead of over a minute that we had laboriously built up is gone, the #8 Toyota takes the lead.

Another departure from Indianapolis

Next accident at the Indianapolis corner. This time it hits the Jota Porsche #38 (Felix da Costa/Stevens/Ye). Antonio Felix da Costa bluntly hits the crash barrier following a commuter. The Portuguese returns the car to the pits, where some more work awaits the Jota squad. The guardrail at the scene of the accident has to be repaired, which will result in a longer slow zone.

Who leads in the LMP2 and GTE?

After 18 hours out of 24 we take a look at the other classes. In the LMP2 class, the Inter-Europol-Oreca #34 (Smiechowski/Scherer/Costa) leads, with the competition breathing down its neck. The German fans can be happy in the LMGTE-Am, because the Project 1 Porsche #56 (Hyett/Jeanette/Cairoli) has taken over the top position from the Iron Ladies.

Ferrari & Toyota an der Box

The leading Ferrari #51 (Pier Guidi/Calado/Giovinazzi) and the second placed Toyota #8 (Buemi/Hartley/Hirakawa) pitted as scheduled. Both stops without changing drivers, allowing Giovinazzi and Buemi to continue. The deficit of the Toyota has now grown to more than a minute.

Glickenhaus out once more

While Glickenhaus #708 (Dumas/Briscoe/Pla) was just hit, Glickenhaus #709 (Mailleux/Berthon/Gutierrez) is now on the way. And once more it happens at the Indianapolis corner – almost identical to the previous incident with Pla. This time Franck Mailleux gets hit, but the impact (this time at the front) is not quite as severe.

Ferrari sets the pace

Antonio Giovinazzi has taken the wheel in the leading Ferrari #51. The Italian sets the pace at the front and is able to pull away from the second-placed #8 Toyota. They are followed by the two Cadillacs #2 and #3, who are, however, lagging behind. However, no one can rest, the top cars are still too close together for that.

Unlock races once more!

The full course yellow has been lifted and the race is back under the green flag. The Ferrari #50 just had to make an emergency stop – and is only now allowed to make the full stop with a tire and driver change. That didn’t go well, but the Ferrari fell behind anyway following technical problems during the night.

Another driver change at Ferrari #51

After just one stint, James Calado hands Ferrari #51 over to Antonio Giovinazzi. The reason: Calado had complained regarding vibrations on the right front wheel. Therefore, as a precaution, the tires are changed, making a driver change mandatory. However, the Ferrari remains in the lead because the #8 Toyota was also in the pits for a major service. Sebastien Buemi got into the car there.

Glickenhaus in trouble

Olivier Pla spun in the Glickenhaus #708 (Dumas/Briscoe/Pla) in the Indianapolis curve and hit the guardrail. The Frenchman then has some difficulties getting the car going once more and requests the marshals’ help.

Why the front of the Toyota #8 had to be changed

According to official information from Toyota, the front end of the #8 car was changed because there was slight damage following debris was run over. As one of our colleagues found out, it was probably not debris, but rather the car collided with a squirrel.

Porsche #6 goes into the pits!

Kevin Estre’s departure had bigger consequences. Apparently the underbody of Porsche #6 is damaged, the car is pushed backwards into the pits. This means that the German manufacturer’s last chance of a podium result, which was slim anyway, is gone. In 2023 in Le Mans, Porsche belongs to the group of defeated.
