Carousel Labor Inspection in Vedrin: Legal or Illegal Child Labor? – The Controversy and Debate

For Sarah, it’s bad news that has just fallen. She and her two daughters, Lili and Zoé, had a check on May 12 in their carousel located in Vedrin. Two labor inspectors came and, as children were helping to run the shelter, the inspector considered this to be illegal child labour. A decision that Sarah does not understand.

We prefer that our children come to spend 3 hours at the merry-go-round helping out (…) rather than hanging around behind a screen. I find it a pity, and serious, that we come to reproach this and that we bring it to child trafficking“, s’agace Sarah.

The manager and instructor of the carousel, Vanessa Dernelle, today risks a fine of 20,000 euros. For her, young people simply volunteer. “I don’t want to change the way I work, because I think it’s legal“, she argues.

But ultimately, is it really legal? The French-speaking volunteering platform responds: “The legislator made it clear that it was in an organization with disinterested goals, non-profit“, specifies Milena Chantraine.

And as the carousel is not an ASBL, it cannot resort to voluntary work. The rest will not take place in a box of horses or defendants, but in front of the labor auditor. It is he who will ultimately decide whether or not to continue Vedrin’s ride.
