A fire in a house in Etterbeek, rue Aviateur Thieffry, claimed the life of one person overnight from Friday to Saturday. It was a student on an exchange program in Brussels.
It’s towards 5am that the Brussels firefighters received several calls for a fire in a house in Etterbeek, located rue Aviateur Thieffry. Upon their arrival, the ground floor is “completely ablaze“. “Additional fire and medical resources were immediately dispatched to the scene.“, explains the spokesperson for the fire brigade, Walter Derieuw.
Those present were evacuated, with the assistance of the Montgomery area police, and a security perimeter has been established. Inside the burning house, firefighters found an unconscious person on the 2nd floor. There resuscitation, immediately started, will not have been enough to save the person of a little less than thirty years: “the person is accidentally died on the spot“, says the spokesperson.
There was two student houses in the House. “The student, from European foreign nationality, was studying in Belgium as part of an exchange program. The necessary will be done by the authorities to warn, as soon as possible, the family of the deceased“, indique Walter Derieuw.
A neighbor was taken to hospital following sustaining a head injury during the evacuation. A firefighter, also injured during the operation, was evacuated to hospital with minor burns to his hand.
Towards 5:15 a.m., the fire was under control. The first elements seem to show that the fire is of accidental origin, but this remains to be confirmed. To overcome this, the firefighters deployed a command vehicle, three pumpers as well as a strategic reserve pump, two self-ladders, two SMURs, three ambulances, a decontamination vehicle and support car.
The house is now uninhabitable, the clearing work is important. Three people need to be relocated. Walter Derieuw ensures that the municipal services will take care of these people“Mayor M. De Wolf having been informed of the facts“.
