Manchester City beat Inter Milan in the Champions League final. We knew it before kick-off, a Belgian was going to win the C1. It was therefore Kevin De Bruyne who put his name on the Champions League list. Before him, other Belgians had managed to win the most prestigious of European competitions. KDB, out injured like two years ago, is the 8th Belgian to lift the “Big Ears” Cup.

Let’s start with an honorable mention. In 1988, four years before the format change of the C1, a certain Eric Gerets, captain of PSV Eindhoven, won the famous European Cup of champion clubs by winning on penalties once morest Benfica. He is officially the first Belgian to lift the big-eared cup.

Another mention, five years later, it is a Belgian trainer in the person of Raymond Goethals who gets his hands on the first Champions League in history with Olympique de Marseille.

We then have to wait… 2013 to see another Belgian triumph. That year, it was Bayern Munich who won the 100% German duel once morest Borussia Dortmund (2-1), to the delight of Daniel Van Buytenleft on the bench.

In 2015, FC Barcelona won 3-1 once morest Juventus and won its 5th C1. Unfortunately for Thomas Vermaelen, his name will never be entered in the prize list of the competition. In fact, wounded for a long time, he had not played a single minute in the competition that season.

Four years later, two Belgians will this time leave with the winner’s medal: Divock Origi et Simon Mignolet. The first city is one of the great architects of the title of Liverpool. He notably planted two goals during the “reassembled” once morest Barça in the semi-finals and another in the final once morest Tottenham (2-0). For his part, although he did not play a single minute in the competition, Mignolet, substitute goalkeeper for Reds at the time, was considered the winner because he was present on the score sheet for the final, unlike “Verminator” in 2015.

More recently, in the last edition, it was Real Madrid of Thibaut Courtois et Eden Hazard which won for the 14th time (!) in its history. Against Liverpool, the Belgian Octopus had made the perfect match, winning the man of the match trophy at the same time. Hazard, he remained on the bench.
