Blueberries for stomach aches

These delicious berries have just shown their ability to relieve pain and improve intestinal and general well-being in patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders.

In a small randomized study of 43 people with gastrointestinal disorders (1)one group received freeze-dried blueberries (Vaccinium Cyanococcus), in proportions equivalent to 180 g of fresh blueberries per day, the other received a placebo. At the end of six weeks of this treatment, the scores of several gastrointestinal well-being evaluation scales (level of gastrointestinal symptoms, abdominal pain, quality of life, stool consistency) were recorded and compared.

It found that blueberries significantly relieved gastrointestinal symptoms and improved general markers of quality of life compared to placebo.

Their content of polyphenols and dietary fibers (preserved during freeze-drying) would be mainly responsible for this. Indeed, it has already been proven that these components can have an impact on intestinal inflammation, permeability and nervous sensitivity while modifying the microbiota composition.
