TIROLER TAGESZEITUNG, editorial: “And suddenly a reform”, by Marco Wittwing, edition of Sunday, June 10, 2023

The federal government’s media show regarding the health care reform is completely transparent.

Innsbruck (OTS) The structural problems did not fall from the sky. The ÖVP and the Greens are currently pursuing a purely announcement policy.

People who form a long line in the cold to get a doctor’s appointment. This is how the year 2023 began in Lienz. At that time, 150 patients stood in front of the ophthalmologist with their feet in the stomach. The photo of the queue made the rounds throughout Austria. It symbolizes the local health system. That’s sick. Long time. Improvement? Not in sight. Also because the sick system was never actually treated.
Yesterday, on a Saturday that was not thematic for the media, the federal government rode out. Steps should now be taken quickly so that the system is reformed and the structural problems that have been delayed for 15 years are eliminated. That sounds like a relentless analysis. Which, if you read the press release more closely, is definitely true. It is unacceptable that family doctors are in short supply in some regions – it says, for example. The Chancellor announces “rapid steps”. The Minister of Health from the Greens sees “a great need for reform”.
Such tones are usually only heard shortly following the formation of a government. Or if the federal government practices the announcement policy once more. The ÖVP has been in the federal government for decades and is now realizing that there are structural problems in the health sector? The Greens have been the Minister of Health for three and a half years and are talking regarding “first steps” to be taken quickly? Really now? By the way: The 100 posts for additional panel doctors (that would be 8! for Tyrol) have already been dug out for the third time. It would be important if the federal government put less energy into its announcements and more energy into implementation. Then people might not have to wait in line for appointments once more next winter.
