Precisely this Saturday, from the Military Hospital in Bogotá, the place to which the minors were transferred since the night of June 9, SEMANA spoke with General Carlos Rincón, medical spokesman for the Military Forces, who delivered a positive report following the first assessment of minors of indigenous origin.

“They are in acceptable physical and mental condition”explained the uniformed officer in dialogue with this medium, confirming that he was able to have brief contact with them, evidencing first-hand that they are very lively, restless and wanting to talk.

According to General Rincón, upon their arrival in Bogotá, the minors were subjected to a series of rigorous examinations to verify the state of health with which they left the jungle, with a view also to beginning the corresponding treatments for their physical and nutritional recovery. , due to the harsh conditions to which they were forced for at least 40 days in the jungle.

General Rincón also highlighted the role that ‘Lesly’, the eldest of the 4 rescued minors, would have played in the survival process of the other minors, accusing that at the moment she did not have the opportunity to delve into the stories that she has to share regarding their experiences in the jungle, and details such as the food that allowed them to achieve the ‘miracle’ of survival.

Currently, the minors are in the hands of the multidisciplinary pediatric team of the Central Military Hospital in Bogotá, specified General Rincón, who explained that following a first assessment, the minors are currently in the process of “completing a protocol of paraclinical examinations and of diagnostic images.

In this sense, the spokesperson for the Military Forces also explained that once this stage has been overcome, the process of “nutritional recovery and psychological and family therapy, which is very important,” will begin.

The uniformed officer confirmed that he was able to verify that the minors indeed “are a little affected from the nutritional point of view”pointing out that the recovery process “will take a few weeks and will be carried out with the support of the ICBF and the family.”

Regarding their psychological evaluation, Rincón added that “I saw them well despite having arrived in a strange environment and being subjected to a medical evaluation.”

“I saw the three older ones very connected with many desires to talk and above all with the desire to start eating once more and to communicate with the family,” he added.

The rescue of the four minors; the oldest of them was 14 years old and the youngest was just one year old, was achieved following 40 days of painstaking search efforts by 150 members of the National Army who went into the jungle, also in the company of members of indigenous communities. and rescuers from the Civil Defense to exhaust the search for the infants.

In the process, the detection of footprints, food remains, and some personal items such as a baby bottle, planted and kept alive the hope of finding them alive; news that was finally confirmed on June 9 in the followingnoon by the national authorities.

About the uniformed men who went into the jungle for the search, it is expected that they will soon be recognized and decorated.
