The Killer of the Deck
Alfredo Galán Sotillo, Spain’s first serial killer, shocked the country by committing a series of brutal murders. With a pistol smuggled in from Bosnia, where he had participated in a humanitarian mission with the Spanish army, Sotillo selected his victims at random. His heinous acts resulted in the deaths of six people and attempts to take the lives of three others. Spanish society was terrified by the cruelty and unpredictability of the crimes.
After a long and exhausting trial, Sotillo was sentenced to 142 years in prison. However, according to the criminal laws in force, he will only serve a maximum of 25 years and will be released when he is 52 years old. This future prospect of freedom for such a dangerous criminal has generated intense debates and discussions regarding the Spanish penal system. Now, it is up to society and the authorities to deal with the devastating consequences left by this ruthless serial killer.
