Gizmodo reports that NASA’s Parker probe would have approached the Sun several times, giving scientists better insight into the origin of solar winds. The team’s findings were published June 6 in the journal Nature.
The car-sized spacecraft was designed to reach a distance of 6.5 million kilometers from the surface of the Sun. This is the shortest distance ever reached by a spacecraft. Gizmodo says recent interactions with the Sun have seen the probe carried by jets of highly energetic material, allowing scientists to trace the origin of the solar winds.
“As Parker gets closer to the Sun, we start to see the structure of the solar winds better. We see high velocity winds with lots of explosions, then they disappear and then they reappear even more powerful” explains James Drake, co-author and professor at the University of Maryland.
According to this new study, the solar wind would be produced by the magnetic reconnections which act on the surface of the Sun. James Drake explains: “This process involves magnetic fields overlapping, breaking apart and then reconnecting. It allows charged particles to leave the Sun’s atmosphere. If you have two magnetic fields pointing in opposite directions, they destroy each other… is that magnetic energy that creates energetic particles.”
