Qatar Airways has signed an agreement with Shell to deliver 3,000 metric tons of pure sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

The agreement covers the existing aviation fuel contract with Shell in Amsterdam, which will now see Qatar Airways using at least a 5% SAF blend during the contract period for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. Qatar Airways’ bilateral agreement with Shell is part of a broader effort initiated by the oneworld alliance, which aims to set SAF usage at 10% of fuel volumes used in the sector by 2030.

Qatar Airways is the first carrier in the Middle East and Africa to acquire a large quantity of SAF in Europe. SAF offers significant decarbonization potential, as this type of pure fuel can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel*. This means that Qatar Airways will reduce its emissions on flights from Amsterdam by approximately 7.5 million tonnes of CO2 for the fiscal year.

Passengers and corporate customers of Qatar Airways can now offset their CO2 emissions by purchasing carbon credits, credited under the criteria of the International Civil Aviation Organization, the UN’s aviation body. Qatar Airways currently invests in carbon credit projects that generate renewable energy, which helps to reduce carbon emissions. The airline is also working on introducing a solution that will allow passengers and corporate customers to offset their emissions by contributing to the cost of the SAF.
