Lebanese Presidential Election: The Battle for Dialogue and Unity

2023-06-09 21:06:28

The duo continued to put pressure on the opposition, by adopting Franjieh’s candidacy and calling for dialogue. The opposition forces reached an agreement on Azour, so attacks began on the man, on the basis that the dialogue is supposed to only get Franjieh. In the language of numbers, and given the coalition that supported Azour’s candidacy, the man is now able to collect a greater number of votes than Franjieh will receive, and he can approach the 65 votes, which entitles him to win in the second round. However, according to Lebanese standards, no sect or component can be bypassed, especially since the Shiite duo has 27 Shiite deputies out of 27. Likewise, the presidential elections in Lebanon are not achieved in terms of numbers and battles, but rather by going to a settlement and agreement. Azour’s high percentage of votes, and his approach of 65 votes, is supposed to be enough to make him more than a serious candidate, but it is what is supposed to complete the path of dialogue with the other party, supported by these votes, and the Christian cover he enjoys, not only politically but also from the Maronite Patriarchate, in addition to good relations abroad. There are already open tracks for this dialogue and discussion.

Distraction of voices
Days before the election session, a lot of pressure is being exerted on a number of deputies in order to reduce Azour’s votes. There are also greater attempts to bring the forces of change and some independents and opponents into a state of self-division, by dispersing their voices and putting forward a third candidate, according to the way they think that they will be able to impose this third option. Knowing that the reaction to this will be a lack of influence, and showing them that they are unable to agree among themselves. In parallel with these pressures, there is a basic criterion that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri must stand before, especially since he has always been keen on the issue of the relationship with all the components in the country, especially with the Christians. This raises many questions as to whether Berri and Hezbollah will continue in a state of confrontation with the Christian majority.

In the statement issued by the Democratic Gathering, basic references were made to reject confrontation and challenge, and to stress the issue of dialogue. Accordingly, regardless of the outcome of the June 14th session, and whether it will be held or will the quorum be disrupted before it convenes, or the second session will be disrupted. This will constitute a basic stage before launching a new round of dialogue, which might be undertaken by three parties, namely the Maronite Patriarchate, Nabih Berri and Walid Jumblatt, to reduce the level of tension, and to devise new mechanisms for dialogue in order to reach an understanding, to mitigate the division that takes on a sectarian or sectarian nature.
