Money is a taboo subject for many Swiss people. But there seems to be a change – more and more people are making their wages public. So did 60 mayors of the canton of Thurgau. Although not everyone wanted to provide information, the “Thurgauer Zeitung” was able to Big Search create an overview (paid items).
All 80 Thurgau communities have been asked for the article, as the “Thurgauer Zeitung” writes. Much of it was cooperative. Some refused, did not give any feedback or only wanted to provide information at a personal appointment, it is said.
Wages up to 230,000 francs
The research revealed the following: Frauenfeld and Kreuzlingen occupy the first two places. This is not surprising as they are the two largest cities in the canton of Thurgau. Thomas Niederberger, Mayor of Kreuzlingen, receives the highest annual salary of CHF 229,584. Together with expenses of 8,300 francs, this results in a total of 237,884 francs.
The mayor of Frauenfeld, Anders Stokholm, takes first place despite a lower annual salary of CHF 220,000. Of all Thurgau communities, he receives the highest expenses of 18,000 francs. In total, that makes 238,000 francs a year.

In detail, it is difficult to compare the wages of the mayors. This is mainly due to the different regulations of the municipalities. “Factors such as professional experience, population, workload and taking office play a major role,” says the newspaper.
There is a wide range in wages. One salary stands out in the research – Bruno Germann, mayor of Dozwil, receives an annual salary of 16,000 francs. He is the only President of Thurgau who works on an honorary basis.

This is what it looks like in the St. Gallen communities
In the canton of St. Gallen, there was already transparency in 2017 regarding the wages of mayors. Many community leaders did not immediately volunteer the figures. At that time, the St. Gallen Media Association asked all municipalities and published their wages, work hours and expense regulations. In 2017, too, not all municipalities wanted to provide information, and the Rhine Valley municipalities in particular were reluctant to do so.
Thomas Scheitlin, the then mayor of St. Gallen, stood out with a top salary of 262,964 francs. Martin Stöckling, Mayor of Rapperswil-Jona, took second place in 2017 with CHF 252,913. It was also striking that eleven other full-time mayors earned more than 200,000 francs a year.
